7. Is the news fair to young people? What about different groups from around the world?

Most of these issues are not black and white. A lot of people will tell you a lot of different things for a lot of different reasons. The key is to look further, read between the lines and keep asking questions.

Recent research has shown that over 70% of all media stories in the UK about young people are negative. The research found that stories are mostly about crime and gangs and social problems, are often exaggerated and don’t always reflect reality.

What is your experience? Do you think young people get enough opportunities to represent themselves and their issues in the media?

What about when you are looking at issues from around the world? When there is coverage of poverty for example, do you think people experiencing poverty are able to represent themselves enough in the international media?

Have a think about whose voices are being heard in the media and if they are really representative.
