THE GLOBAL WALK ACTIVITY
This is an activity that we carried out with a special needs group (SNAP). The idea is that the youth workers develop a ‘global walk’ around their locality that enables participants to explore their personal and community connections with the wider world.
In Bridgwater, the Rollercoaster youth workers devised a walk and worksheet that involved;
* Going into a travel agent and getting a brochure of a country you have been to (or would like to go)
* Visiting the museum and finding out what Bridgwater was famous for producing and exporting
* Going into a clothes shop and finding out where two items were made, and where the company headquarters are based
* Noticing how many different types of restaurants there are (and eating lunch in an Indian restaurant)
* Finding out where different instruments originate from at the music shop
* Going to the local food market and asking where the produce had come from (see photo)
This is the SNAP group on the Global Walk around Bridgwater. Members asked about where the different fruit and vegetables originated.
This is a picture of one SNAP member who has found out where this top was made, and where the company headquarters are based.
As part of the de-brief after the walk we used the big world map again to stick on bits of information that we had discovered (or picture cut outs of items).
